Joaquin is the Production Coordinator at True Calling. Also known as Joa, he hails from São Paulo and moved to Vancouver to study film production at UBC, and pursue his True Calling: producing documentaries. Since graduating, Joaquin has co-produced and shot a web series pilot for Storyhive, worked as a video editor, and was a first assistant director on an indie feature film in Quebec. On the side, Joaquin loves to produce other content such as music videos, rides his bike, snowboards, barbecues and hits the beach. Watch this space: Joaquin is inspired to tell stories of Canada’s Indigenous community, and his first upcoming TC episode is on pro skater Joe Buffalo. He looks forward to bringing more stories to the screen.

What is it that you really do?

I work in production, in office and on set; booking crews, gear and travel for shoots, as well as expense logging and general organizing of production binders. When I started here, I was smashing old company tapes with a sledgehammer in the back alley.

What breakfast kickstarts your day?

I need my Nesquik.

What’s your favourite thing to wear to work?

Anything smart and casual.

What would your 16-year-old self think of you now?

Keep at it!

What keeps you up at night?

Mosquitos.

What was the best decision you’ve ever made?

Big question! Coming to Vancouver to pursue filmmaking has kept me happy.

What is your favourite quote?

“Try to look at the world you are filming with the curious eyes of a child seeing it for the first time. And film it that way.” —Barry Hampe
