Olympian Adam Froese is Loving Life After Field Hockey
When you’re known publicly as a field hockey player for Canada’s Olympic team, it’s a big and emotional decision to walk away from it all. This is the story of Adam Froese, who has recently moved on from his full-time commitment to Canada’s Men’s field hockey team to start a new path as an analyst in Corporate Finance at Deloitte.
Sport has always been a big part of Adam’s life, having started playing field hockey in Perth, Australia at eight years old. When the opportunity came to play for Canada at the age of 18, he snapped it up, and encouraged by his Winnipeg-born dad, made the move across the world.
For Adam, there have been many highs and lows to his sporting career, and many moments which have forced him to reflect on his career direction. In 2012, Canada’s men’s field hockey team lost out on the opportunity of making the London Olympics, losing to Argentina in the Pan American Games. It was a self-confessed “confusing time” for Adam, and it compelled him to re-evaluate his life: What do I want to do with my life? Do I commit another four years to pursue my Olympic dream? Or is time to move on?
He eventually made the decision to stay on, committing the next four years to making the Rio Olympics, and everything else took a back seat. Adam played a pivotal role in Canada qualifying for the 2016 Olympics, scoring the shootout winner against New Zealand in the quarterfinal of the World League Olympic Qualification Tournament, and against Brazil in the semifinals of the Pan Am Games.
Adam was introduced to Deloitte, one of the top-tier accounting firms in the world, through Game Plan. Powered by Deloitte, Game Plan is Canada’s total athlete wellness program that strives to support national team athletes to live better and more holistic lives. Through the development of their skills and network, athletes are able to focus on health, education, and career opportunities both during their high-performance career and beyond. The program helps to develop mentally stronger athletes who apply what they have learned as leaders in sport for the betterment of themselves and their communities.
Adam has always defined himself by the sport and has now had to find something else to define himself by. And while the transition has been challenging, it was Adam’s qualities as an athlete—commitment, leadership, dedication—that landed him his role at Deloitte. Now, he’s been able to find value in everything he’s achieved as an athlete, and knows these values are also recognised as significant to others in different industries. Just as Adam’s field hockey team inspired him, his colleagues at Deloitte similarly excite him to set a new bar. He’s now a firm believer that you can find your passion in a multitude of different things.
Game Plan is a collaboration between the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), Sport Canada and the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN) to provide the best resources this country has to offer to our national team athletes.
